Wind Turbine Blade Design and Testing

Fall 2022

Group Project with Emily Matteson, Nicole Saberra and one other person

The goal of this project was to optimize the blades of a wind turbine to produce as much power as possible over a given Weibull wind velocity distribution as well as other geometric and rotational constraints. The airfoil shape was selected by testing various airfoils in a wind tunnel and selecting the largest lift to drag ratio. The blades pitch along the radius was designed using an iterative process. Beginning with a Betz-optimal geometry the blade chord length and pitch along the radius were iteratively refined using a Matlab script according to a physical model.
